The short and practical definition of an art studio is a place where the artist works and creates. An atelier (French: [atəlje]) is the private workshop or studio of a professional artist in the fine or decorative arts or an architect, where a principal master and a number of assistants, students, and apprentices can work together producing fine art or visual art released under the master's name or supervision.

The distinction between a Studio Art major and a Fine Art major can vary among colleges, but generally speaking, Studio Art focuses on the practical aspects and techniques of creating art, while Fine Art looks at the theory, history, and interpretation of art, in addition to hands-on practice.
